Cycling Tour of Andalucía
April 1st to 6th 2025
With our tour of Andalucía, discover one of the most beautiful corners of the province of Málaga, the Axarquía region of Andalucía guided by Port Velo, stretching from the eastern side of Málaga to the beautiful town of Nerja.
Normally showcased by La Vuelta a España every August, Andalucía has to be one of the best places to ride a bike.
You’ll experience one of the best climates in Europe, along with clear well surfaced roads, fabulous coastal and mountain routes and varied scenery and of course lots of beautiful climbs to ride.
On this cycling holiday we explore the province of Málaga, home to several National Parks. Starting in Málaga, before taking in Ronda, Antequera, and the surrounding landscapes, before finally arriving in Málaga, for our final night.
With an abundance of flights from Bristol, a favourable climate, nice hotels and mouth-watering Andalucía cuisine, what are you waiting for?
Assisted by fantastic guides and a support vehicle, you can ride at your own pace to get the most out of each day. It is an ideal holiday for mixed ability groups. This week is very much a 'holiday' and riding through the ancient landscape, enjoying the far reaching and dramatic views will leave you feeling enlivened and with a sense of achievement with lasting memories.
Arrival / Departure Transfers
We are offering transfers to and from Malaga airport to your hotel. The following itinerary is based on the EasyJet flight from Bristol and the return flight on the Sunday. There are alternatives provided by Ryanair and Jet2.
Please Note: For anyone travelling with their bike, depending on the numbers, there may be an extra charge if we need a vehicle with a trailer.
Bike Hire
Alternatively for those not wanting to take their own bike, there are bikes available for hire. Please see our Bike Hire page for details such as full specs and dimensions. Please note that we cannot guarantee that there will be a bike in your size available. If you would like to ensure a bike is available we would advise checking availability before booking your holiday.
Accommodation
We know how important it is to be well rested as part of your trip, and have selected hotels that will do a good job of looking after you on your visit!
The hotels provide a comfortable nights sleep and in many cases a stunning setting! Most offer bike storage, where possible, great food, a pool and in the case of Málaga within walking distance of the fabulous Old Town.
They are well set up for cyclists and the staff do their upmost to make sure we are looked after!
The holiday is priced, based on a twin occupancy of a double room. However should you wish to opt for a double room to yourself, this is available at the time of booking and priced accordingly.
Meals
Breakfast will be included at the hotel. Lunch and dinner are not included.
We will endeavour to carry emergency energy gels and bars, along with bananas and water. However you are advised to bring along your own preferred sports nutrition to fuel your ride.

With Port Velo Cycling Road Tours, you will explore the picturesque scenery of the incredibly romantic region of Andalucía on deserted roads, gliding through never-ending olive and orange groves. You will of course encounter challenging climbs but also enjoy spectacular descents along winding roads which will make you smile time and again. The mountain passes are still relatively unknown, although they have been part of La Vuelta a España in many editions. They are just as challenging and even more scenic than the most famous European climbs. In recent times, Málaga has been acknowledged as a great alternative to the most typical cycling destinations in Spain. Its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, picturesque inland Andalucían villages and good tarmac quality, make it a perfect place for all cyclists who want to escape overcrowded cycling destinations.
The route of this tour is flexible and should be seen as a guide only. Local conditions, weather or fitness could lead to changes in our daily plans. All times and distances are approximate.
Málaga is more than just a cycling destination
If you combine this with the extensive range of leisure and cultural activities on offer, then Malaga is where you belong. It is a city that is best enjoyed slowly and can easily be explored on foot. Boasting great historical and cultural heritage, it is one of the oldest towns in Europe, founded by the Phoenicians, conquered by the Romans and the Arabs later. All these civilizations have left their mark and part of their culture can still be felt in the streets and architecture of Málaga nowadays.

Málaga is mainly known for its cultural and recreational offers, you can spend hours enjoying its architectural sites, art museums and beaches. In addition, it's famous for its traditional, yet avant-garde, healthy, varied cuisine. And on top of that, Málaga is considered one of the 10 best quality of life cities in Europe boasting more than 300 sunny days a year.
Surrounded by mountains, bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and known for its mild climate, Malaga is the ideal city for a cycling base. Walking through its historical and lively streets, you will enjoy Málaga without even having to use public transportation.
To enjoy an unforgettable Andalucian cycling holiday, you don’t have to pack your bags and travel to a new destination every day. We will take you on a beautiful off-the-beaten-track cycling journey to discover lesser-known spots, beautiful corners and charming patios and get to know the region’s real face.
We'll also spend two nights in the town of Ronda, one of the oldest towns in Spain and another haven of culture, before heading over to Antequera. After a couple of nights here, we'll we will finally arrive in Málaga, for our final night.
A sample of what you can expect
Málaga to Ronda
Our journey starts from Málaga and heads into the National Park of the Sierra Bermeja, an ampitheatre of mountains that runs from Marbella to Estepona. We'll be climbing pretty much as soon as we move away from the coastline - you can see the mountains looming in the distance and the views when we get up here will not disappoint!
Our day finishes up in Ronda where we'll have two nights to explore this famous Andalusian town.
Ronda loop via Olvera
Today we ride a loop out to the North East of Ronda, passing through the picturesque towns of Arriate and Sentenil de las Bodegas on our way out to Olvera.
Olvera is a historical town in the province of Cadiz, dominated by the Castillo de Olvera which towers over the town. On leaving here we'll loop back round towards Ronda, hugging the western coastline of the Zahara-el Gastor reservoir and passing through the town of Zahara de la Sierra, a stunning hilltop town overlooking the valley.
Upon your return, there's plenty to explore in Ronda including the Puente Nuevo ("new bridge" over the Tajo de Ronda gorge), the Plaza de Toros (bullfighting ring) and the Banos Arabes (Moorish Baths).
Ronda to Antequera
Today we head east into the National Park of Sierra de las Nieves, a 300 square km area encompassing Ronda. It's famous for its stunning mountainous landscape, fresh produce and wealth of wildlife, and provides us with some superb views on our journey to our next location. The day is full of incredible scenery, but one of the highlights is Gobantes, where we'll enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the lake.
Our day finishes in the historical town of Antequera, a picturesque whitewash town with ancient cobbled streets and a striking Moorish fortress.
Antequera to Málaga
After a lovely hearty breakfast we head back to Málaga. The route back is spectacular, it isn't all down hill but the descents on beautifully maintained roads and incredible vistas, shows off this region in all its glory! The road winds its way back down to the coast via wild switch backs that run like a knot under each other.
